Contrave is an FDA-approved prescription drug for weight loss. It is meant to help individuals who are excessively overweight or obese manage their weight and reduce the risk of health problems that can result from obesity, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Contrave can help to reduce the feelings of hunger and curb cravings. It is meant to be used in conjunction with diet and exercise.

This brand name medication is an extended-release tablet and contains two main active ingredients: naltrexone HCl (8mg) and bupropion HCl (90mg). Naltrexone belongs to a class of drugs called opiate antagonists and is often prescribed to help combat addiction problems as it can block the effects of narcotics. Bupropion is an antidepressant that can help restore the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. That being said, for the purpose of Contrave, both of these medications have been selected for their effects on appetite. They can work together on separate parts of the brain to help reduce appetite and cravings.

Contrave is an oral medication and should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed. If you feel that your dosage should be changed, speak to your doctor before you make any changes to how you take this medication.

There is a risk of side effects with Contrave. The most common adverse effects include (but are not necessarily limited to): constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache stomach pain, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, flushing, sweating, dry mouth, strange taste in the mouth. More serious side effects that are rare include: mental or mood changes, anxiety, memory loss, confusion, ringing in the ears, tremors, severe headache, fainting, rapid and/or irregular heartbeat, chest pain.

Keep in mind that this is not a full list of possible side effects. If you should experience any of these side effects or have any other concerns while taking Contrave, contact your doctor immediately.

Contrave is not for everyone. This product should not be taken by pregnant or nursing women or a woman who is planning on becoming pregnant. It may also not be suitable for individuals with certain health conditions or who may be taking certain medications. Inform your doctor of all past and present medical conditions as well as any drugs (prescription and OTC) and supplements you may be taking.

It is also worth noting that Contrave may not work well for everyone. According to FDA documents regarding results from a discontinued safety study involving the weight loss drug, 62% of participants who were given Contrave stopped taking the medication because they couldn’t stand the side effects (most notably constipation, headaches and nausea).

Furthermore, another clinical trial revealed that 42% of the 4,500 obese individuals who took part lost a minimum of 5% of their stating body weight with the help of Contrave compared to 17% of those on a placebo. However, that means that the other 58% of participants taking the drug during the trial either didn’t lose much weight or lost nothing at all.

The bottom line: Contrave doesn’t appear to work well for everyone. Discuss your options with your doctor.
