Weight loss supplements are big business these days, and with their popularity comes a growing list of weight loss pills myths. Many people who take these dietary supplements do so with the hopes and dreams of getting a fit body. That being the case, a person who is desperate to lose weight and to lose it quickly, is more likely to want to believe the unsubstantiated claims they may have heard about some of these products.

The trouble with believing those falsehoods is that it may not only lead to a waste of your hard-earned money, but, in some cases, it could be dangerous to your health as well.

With that in mind, here are a few weight loss pills myths you should avoid mistaking as fact if you are considering taking these supplements to help you reach your dieting and exercise goals. 

The “Miracle” Myth 

No diet pill – prescription or nonprescription – is a “magic” or “miracle” pill that melts away fat all on its own. It doesn’t matter if you’re taking Phentermine or a herbal supplement, you still need to eat a calorie-conscious diet and engage in some level of physical activity on a regular basis to drop the excess weight. The best diet pill formulas have been developed to support the efforts you make to lose weight, to help make the process easier. The products themselves do not lead to weight loss on their own.  

The “All Natural, 100% Safe with No Side Effects” Myth 

This is one of most common weight loss pills myths in the OTC diet pill industry, and it’s one of the most misleading and potentially dangerous. Some manufacturers of OTC diet pills are highly irresponsible and claim that because their product’s formula contains only herbs and not stimulants, chemicals, etc., that it is 100% safe without the risk of side effects.

The reality is that all medications, supplements, etc., carry a risk of unwanted side effects. Although the potential for adverse effects are much more likely and severe with potent prescription formulas, and those OTC pills loaded with stimulants, this doesn’t mean a non-stimulant herbal supplement is side-effect free and safe for just anyone to ingest. Always remember, simply because something comes from nature (tree, plant or flower), this doesn’t make it harmless. Be sure to have a look at the ingredients and research the names to make sure you aren’t allergic to anything. 

The “Scientifically Proven Ingredients” Myth

There is a huge difference between ingredients that have been scientifically studied for weight loss and those that have been scientifically proven for weight loss. Currently, no dietary supplement contains ingredients that have been clinically proven effective at causing weight loss.  This doesn’t mean that you won’t necessarily find an OTC weight loss supplement that works for you, or course. It simply means that these supplements are unregulated, are not FDA approved, and any claims that a manufacturer makes about their product in regard to its proven ability to cause weight loss, is untrue.

Ultimately, while there are many weight loss pills myths, the best way to protect yourself is to always remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
